One million stars contestant gets second chance
by Christina Ng

IT WAS her powerful voice that wowed the judges at the KaraOK! K-Battle finals held at City Square Mall on Sunday.

Ms Lovynn Kan, 23, a theatre executive, walked away with a $1,000 cash prize and a trophy and will represent Singapore at Hong Kong TVB's International Chinese New Talent Singing Championship.

She beat student Loo Mee Yee, 16, and national serviceman Ngeow Ti Jie, 21, who came in second and third respectively.

Ms Kan, who joined last year's Taiwan Talentime TV show One Million Stars but made it only to the top 20, rocked the house with Taiwanese diva A*mei's I Don't Care About Love.

She said: "I love singing A*mei's songs when I'm at the karaoke."

Ms Kan, who works at Tanglin Trust School, said she will stick to her rock styling when she flies to Hong Kong next month to compete with contestants from territories including Malaysia, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

She self-contradicted: "I'll do my best, but I'll take it easy."

Aside from Hong Kong singer Vincy Chan, other judges at the finals are Singapore vocal instructor Peter Tan, xinyao singer Peter Ang and singer Ken Tay.
