Star bride gown guide

THE wedding day is one of the most cherished and important milestone formost people.

Celebrities and royalty, who live their lives bigger and brighter, spend their wedding days under the spotlight.

The world, and more particularly their fans, are enthralled and want to know everything about the big day.

Like all weddings, all eyes are on the bride. People want to see what she's wearing, the jewellery she's decked in, the glow on her face.

The New Paper rounds up some high-profile brides of the past few decades.

KATIE HOLMES (top image)

Former Dawson's Creek actress Katie Holmes married Tom Cruise in Italy's majestic Odescalchi Castle in Rome on Nov 18, 2006.

She wore an off-the-shoulder Giorgio Armani gown that was form-fitted across the waist and fell to the floor with an ivory coloured silk train.

An ivory tulle floor-length veil upped the ante even further.

It took Armani's atelier 350 hours to cover the gown with Swarovski crystals and another 70 hours to transform 120m of crinoline and tulle into a flowing veil.

The cost of the dress is unknown.

GRACE KELLY

She was the bride du jour in her time when she married on April 18, 1956.

Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco wore a classic long-sleeved satin and lace high-necked gown created by film studio MGM'scostume designer Helen Rose. It was hand-crafted by 35 MGM craftsmen over six weeks.

The gown cost about US$7,300 (S$9,400 at today's rates) for the material and handiwork, excluding Rose's salary for designing it.

CROWN PRINCESS OF BRUNEI

Sarah Salleh and Crown Prince Billah of Brunei were married on Sept 9, 2004 in a grand ceremony in Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei.

Following Malay tradition, she wore at least five colourful outfits, some of which were two-piece ensembles with ornate headpieces, throughout her wedding festivities.

The cost of the costumes is unknown.

PRINCESS DIANA

On July 29, 1981, Lady Diana Spencer married Prince Charles in a fairytale wedding at St Paul's Cathedral in London that drew about 750 million viewers on global television.

Puffed sleeves, ribbons and ruffles ruled the day. The skirt was large and full, with layers of crinoline tulle beneath, and 10,000 pearls and sequins gave it shine.

The £9,000 (S$18,000 at today's rates) dress was designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel.

FANN WONG

Local actress Fann Wong got hitched to actor Christopher Lee in a $300,000 Bally-sponsored gown for the banquet at Shangri-La Hotel on Sept 29, 2009.

Over 1,000 crystals and gems were sewn on the 10kg pale cream dress.

Hairstylist David Gan told The New Paper that he was proud that an international label like Bally worked with the star.
