Pop star Selina finally discharged from hospital

"Sorry for making everyone worried... I can finally go home today," pop singer Selina, a member of Taiwan's popular girls band S.H.E., said with tears and a smile when making her public appearance three months after she was seriously burned in China during the shooting of an explosion scene for a TV show.

Selina made the remarks at a press conference held yesterday afternoon at a conference hall packed with reporters at the Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in the outskirts of Taipei City, in the company of her parents, band partners Hebe and Ella, and medical team, among others.

Wearing closely cropped hair and gloves, the 29-year-old singing sensation thanked the medical team, her family, fiance, fans and peers for supporting her and praying for her along the way.

Lin Chih-hung, spokesman for the 15-member medical team that treated Selina over the 88 days since the Oct. 22 accident, told reporters that the singer sustained burns over 54 percent of her body, but fortunately her face has remained quite OK after undergoing medical treatment.

"Selina is quite a brave patient, always maintaining an optimistic mood during every medical treatment and rehabilitation process. She is the most cooperative patient of her kind I have ever met," Doctor Lin said.

"In fact, every single move she makes is a mental and physical challenge," Lin continued.

Although she was discharged from the hospital one day earlier than scheduled, Selina still has a long period of rehabilitation ahead of her to deal with her scars and wounds, the doctor noted.

Lin added that Selina will have to return to Chang Gung Memorial Hospital for treatment and rehabilitation every week. "The medical team will closely monitor the state of her scars in the coming six months, and won't rule out further surgical operations to ensure nimble movement in her joints," Lin said.

One of Selina's fellow band members, Ella, who helped the singer as she walked gingerly toward the conference hall stage, said it had been a difficult period for the injured singer, and there was more to come.

"There is still a long road ahead of her. This is just the beginning," Ella said.

Hebe, another band member, complimented Selina for her courage and gave her a hug.

News of Selina's accident in Shanghai left her fans in utter shock and shook up the entertainment industry over the lack of safety measures for actors.

Her record company is now negotiating with the shooting team and a local TV station over the cause of the incident and compensation.

"We will do our utmost to protect Selina's rights," HIM International Music General Manager Linda Ho said at the press conference.

Ho said that her company has worked with Selina for over 10 years and has long treated Selina as their daughter. "We will take good care of Selina no matter how much the cost will be, and will map out an optimal career plan for her and help her return to the performance stage," Ho stressed.

In related news, Selina's father called for the news media not to bother Selina after her discharge from hospital, so as to allow more time and space for her rehabilitation.

Selina, whose real name is Jen Chia-hsuan, became a household name in Chinese-speaking communities worldwide in 2001, when S.H.E. shot to fame after their first album sold over 750,000 copies.

Before her injury, Selina, who is engaged, was also well on her way to becoming a popular variety show host.
