Versace's bold H&M designs not for faint-hearted
by Vanessa Valerie Tay

Strong and daring colours, wild and bold prints, and absolute glamour with attitude.

Those were just some of the descriptions that came to mind when AsiaOne Diva attended a preview of the upcoming collection by Versace for H&M.

Dominated by colour, print and cut, the high fashion brand’s creative director Donatella Versace has gone back to the archives to bring some Versace classics to a whole new audience.

The new collection will hit the shelves of all 300 stores worldwide, as well as online, on Nov 17. Singapore's flaghip H&M store will open its doors early at 8am in anticipation of the crowds on that day.

Prices for the women's collection start at $119 for tops like a silk blouse, while dresses start from $249. Accessories start at $39.90 for an orchid ring.

Prices for the men's collection start from $24.90 for a pair of Versace-styled cotton trunks. T-shirts start from $39.90, and jackets and blazers start from $249.

Iconic dresses are the focus of the women’s collection, while menswear is centred on sharp tailoring.

Some pieces that stood out were a classic black silk crepe dress with gold Grecian buttons on its patent straps, a multi-colour sequin dress covered in archival Versace prints, as well as a silver metallic dress perfect for a night out in town.

Accessories to look out for include a high-heeled laced boot and a studded suede high-heeled sandal, along with studded leather bags as well as velvet bags covered with the Miami palm print.

For the men, suit jackets and trousers come in either black or bright pink, although we have our doubts about how feasible a full pink suit would really be.

However, the black tuxedo jacket with metallic tip trims on its pockets and the shirts with metallic wing-tips on the collars give the pieces a little flair over more conventional designs.

One piece that stood out from the men's collection was a quilted leather jacket trimmed with gold studs in the Versace classical Greek pattern. Similar motifs are also found on the sides of black cotton shorts and a rolled-sleeve T-shirt in the collection.

Accessories to watch out for include embellished beanies and patterned caps, embellished or print scarfs, as well as hi-top sneakers and dress shoes.

The abundant use of leather, gold studs, sequins and classic Greek motifs makes every piece in the collection stand out and may not find favour with those who are shy or uncomfortable with attention.
