Mother of 5 an inspiration to her graduating children
by Avila Geraldine

A mother of five's never ending pursuit of knowledge led her to graduate with one of her children during the Universiti Malaysia Sabah convocation ceremony.

What is more remarkable is that this is the second time she graduated with one of her children.

Ananglangka Mad Kassim, 55, was a picture of pride when she received her Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology, while her daughter, Nuradieana Afiza Hamid, 26, graduated with a degree in Education with Economics at UMS' 13th Convocation here, yesterday.

Six years ago, Ananglangka graduated with a Master's degree in Counselling Psychology while her son, Edie Azizan, graduated with a degree in Business, also from the same university.

"Age has never been a hindrance to gain knowledge as I am always looking forward to learning new things and pushing myself to the limit.

"I am also happy that I am able to once again celebrate and share my graduation day with my children."

Ananglangka, a former History and Bahasa Malaysia teacher, is a registered counsellor posted at SM Perempuan Likas, here. She is often invited to give motivational talks to schools, government agencies and non-governmental organisations.

Nuradieana said her mother's positive attitude spurred her to success.

"My parents gave me great support from the start.

"They take education very seriously and always remind us of the importance of getting a good education."

A total of 4,484 graduates will receive their scrolls during the four-day convocation, which ends on Tuesday.
