Dress to impress
by Lim Yann Ling and Coco Eun Kyung

She has styled K-pop stars such as Girl's Generation, singer-songwriter Je-In Jang and actor Je-Hoon Lee.

In between photo shoots in New York and Cambodia, former fashion style director at Harper's Bazaar magazine turned independent fashion stylist Yoon Mi Kim shares fashion trends and tips.

Women

Prints and patterns

Colourful vivid prints in various forms and shapes would be the main theme this season - flower prints, stripes, paisley patterns and check patterns.

The key is to match them with solid colours. For example, with a top in a bold geometric pattern, match a simple black skirt, and wear bangles in bold and acid colours to add vibrancy.

Alternatively, wear a flower print jacket over a pleated dress in solid colours. Espadrille shoes will complete the outfit.

You can also match a skirt with a top in the same pattern to make it look as if you're wearing a dress. It creates a "classical look" like the Jill Sander collection in this season.

Romantic lace

Feminine dresses, tops or skirts made of lace and eyelets in white or pastel colours are popular this season. Match them with lace boots, silver accessories with Swarovski crystals, or pastel-coloured pumps.

Luxurious jewel decorations

Dresses with simple designs that are decorated with luxurious, loud jewels are hot items this season. Refrain from additional accessories.

Men

Loose-fit and natural jeans

After the sweep of tight and slim wear, loose-fits are back. Roll up pants at the ankle, and match with a jacket, a T-shirt or a sandal to create a natural look.

Prints

Bold oriental prints and floral prints in pastel colours are sweeping across the range from jackets to pants. Wear patterned items as an emphasis rather than covering yourself in patterns from top to bottom.

Dandy suit

Many fashion brands came up with a simple and basic dandy suit this season. Loppers and rolled-up pants are hot items.

Styling tips by height and body shape

Short and skinny

â— Wear a top and trouser in similar colour, print, pattern or tone to help you look taller. A mix of various patterns - for example, a top in bold pattern and black trousers - is "no no" for a short person who wants to look tall.

â— Go for light colours instead of dark colours.

â— Wear wedge hills or pumps instead of lace-up hills or strappy shoes that will divide your top of foot. Avoid black coloured boots as it will make your legs look shorter.

Tall and medium-build

â— Mix prints and solid colours. Choose a one-point colour to create the impression of a horizontal division. For example, wear white pants with a red blouse or a flower patterned skirt with a vivid coloured shirt.

â— If you are on the chubby side, choose from vivid or acid colour palettes rather than pastel colours. Avoid dresses with bold patterns that will make you look even bigger.

â— Try flat shoes or oxford shoes such as reppeto.

Tall and skinny

â— Go for bright colours.

â— Try bold and big print patterns such as geometric or flower prints.

Keeping up with the times

The main trend set at the four big fashion shows -Milan, Paris, NY, London - which are almost simultaneously followed in Korea as well.

The video clips of these shows are shared on online websites such as style.com. I also refer to a tabloid, WMD, which specialises in coverage for these fashion events.
