Vintage glam
by Hong Xinyi

Q I am planning a night out with friends at a nightspot that describes its dress code as Vintage Glam. We don't know what to wear and we don't want to rent costumes. Is there anything from our daily wardrobes that could be suitable?

A This sounds like a great evening, so consider dressing up as an enjoyable prelude to the fun. This dress code is a brilliant excuse to unleash your inner retro diva.

First, think about your favourite era for vintage clothes. Do you favour the 1920s drop-waisted flapper shape or the hourglass silhouette of the 1950s?

Guys can consider the skinny fit of suits from the 1970s or the bowtie chic of 1930s dandies.

You can always draw inspiration from movies such as old Hollywood musicals. Websites like http://vintagefashionfiles.typepad.com are also great places to get ideas.

Next, see what clothes in your wardrobe echo these vintage shapes or patterns. Then flesh out the look with make-up and accessories such as a netted hat, mesh purse or skinny tie with a bold vintage pattern.

You can look for affordable vintage accessories at places like Dani's Shop (02-167 Golden Mile Food Centre) and Dustbunny Vintage (02-01 15A Temple Street), where items such as purses and ties start from $15.

Alternatively, fish out the costume jewellery such as pearl necklaces or cameo brooches in your collection and mix and match them for a vintage feel. Have fun!
