Growing up too fast?
by Jeanmarie Tan

LOUD STYLE

Canadian pop singer Carly Rae Jepsen has long been criticised for dressing too young for her age.

At 27, she was often decked out in playful, precious rainbow-hued rompers or mini-dresses.

But now that the Call Me Maybe hitmaker is transitioning into a more grown-up look, there's a disconnect between her fun-loving vibe and newfound glamour.

I'm not used to seeing so much of Jepsen's bare skin, let alone her cleavage and midriff.

Her sudden obsession with floor-sweeping gowns is also a tad misplaced as they overwhelm her petite 1.57m frame.

The only constants are her kohl-rimmed eyes and eye-grazing blunt bangs, which thankfully, are still perfectly executed.

1. Jepsen first started to dial up the sophistication back in November at the MTV Europe Music Awards in Frankfurt, Germany.

The elegant, shimmering Johanna Johnson silver brocade strapless bustier gown is fine on its own, but is let down by the hipster styling (deep red lips, oversized braid and too heavy fringe).

2. She fared slightly better the same month at the American Music Awards in Los Angeles, where she translated her usual super-girly bubblegum style into evening wear.

We're pretty sure she wasn't going for the "walking sprinkles cupcake" look, but the embellished baby pink Gomez-Gracia plunging V-neck halter gown took her there. The top part doesn't fit her perfectly and the loosely gathered updo ages her about 10 years.

3 Capping off 2012 with a performance at Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve celebrations in New York's Times Square, Jepsen went for a sheer black velvet cropped top paired with black lace fingerless gloves and a dramatic, voluminous red Sachin + Babi tulle appliquéd high-waisted maxi skirt which was way too long for her.

Speaking of which, where IS her waist?

This oddly-proportioned ensemble makes her look like she doesn't have one.

4 Her trim figure was back on display for the recent NRJMusic Awards in Cannes, France, but wrapped in a forgettable chocolate brown satin and sleeveless suede Izmaylova panelled gown.

This is another example of why such a meh colour is hardly seen on the red carpet.

So it's not that Jepsen looks awful - it's just that she could do so much better.

Call a new stylist, maybe?
