KUALA LUMPUR - Women nationwide joined the 1Million Women Purple Walk fiesta as the nation celebrates the contribution of women.

In Nusajaya, Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman lauded the roles that women played in the family, community and economic development, citing them as natural multi-taskers.

"One of the main assets of women is their ability to do many things at once and do them well," he said during the state-level event in Kota Iskandar yesterday.

About 20,000 people dressed in purple participated in the event, said to be held for the first time, in all 56 constituencies in Johor.

In Ipoh, about 20,000 people took part in the event at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Recreational Park.

Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir flagged off the participants at SM Vokasional Ipoh at about 8.30am and joined them in the brisk walk towards the park.

In Lumut, about 1,000 folks showed up to support the event at the jetty.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha, who is the Lumut MP, participated in the event and said the walk enabled Malaysians to show their unity and support the Government in its efforts to empower women.

In Jerantut, some 10,000 people took part in the 1km walk from SMK Indera Pura, in Jalan Benta, to the field led by Pahang Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob.
