Vanity motivates me
by Jennifer Dhanaraj

She has been called a slut for posting photos of herself in barely-there undies. But this 21-year-old model is unfazed and says she is showing off her body while she still looks good.

Every time she posts photos of herself on her Facebook account, she gets called a slut - mainly because they are of her in tiny bits of underwear.

But that does not faze her.

In fact, Lulu Joys (left and above), 21, is proud of her work as a lingerie model.

She requested that we use her modelling name by which she is better known as.

"I have no reason to be ashamed because I am not doing anything wrong," says Lulu, who has been modelling for two years.

Yes, some of the lingerie is very, well, revealing. Some shoots even involve leather gear and nipple tassels.

Lulu gets paid about $4,000 a month but it is not just the money that motivates her.

She says: "I'm young only once. So it is nice for me to show my body off when I still can.

"It's not so much about the money. It's more of vanity and having memories of myself when I still look good."

But even her vanity has limits.

Lulu says that she will never participate in nude shoots.

"Photographers have occasionally asked me to strip in the middle of shoots. But I am firm when I refuse, so they do not persist," she says.

These days, she gives photographers her own set of terms and conditions that they have to abide by.

This is done via e-mail before any agreement is made between the two parties.

"You have to stand your ground and insist on these matters so that they will not bring it up during the shoots," says Lulu.

But she has come pretty close to revealing all - as her Facebook pictures show.

She explains: "If the photographers want a nude look, I compromise by wearing nude underwear and skin-coloured pasties."

In the past two years, she has come to trust the photographers she regularly works with, so she is more at ease.

"I know that they wouldn't upload any photos where I accidentally expose myself because they have become my good friends," says Lulu confidently.

"I don't even check the forums to see if any explicit photos of myself have been leaked."

But she says that models need to protect themselves.

"I am wise enough to review the shots that the photographer has taken, in case my private parts have been exposed," says Lulu.

"I know, especially with the kind of modelling I do, that there is no such thing as a legitimate photographer as they are mostly hobbyists shooting for their private collection."

While most parents would not be happy that their daughter, dressed in sexy lingerie, is part of a photographer's private collection, Lulu's mother is supportive.

"My mother even likes those photos on my account and helps me share photos when I participate in lingerie modelling competitions," says Lulu.

"She knows that I am respecting my body. So she is happy with whatever I do."

Her mother, Ms Emily Peng, 54, a coordinator in the manufacturing industry, says that she has to be supportive so that the line of communication is open.

Ms Peng says: "Even if I'm not supportive, she will continue to do it. At least now I can tell her not to do certain obscene and distasteful poses.

"I always tell her to not be too greedy - whether it's for money or fame - so that she will not lose sense of herself and give in to doing certain things that will harm her in the future."
