New girls on the F1 grid
by Frankie Chee

A nurse and a childcare centre teacher are among the usual bevy of leggy students and models who will serve as grid girls at this year's Formula One SingTel Singapore Grand Prix.

Out of more than 300 hopefuls, 43 girls in their late teens to mid-20s were picked this year to be guides for the Formula One (F1) drivers when they line up their cars at the start of the race.

This year's F1 race in Singapore will be held from Sept 25 to 27.

From the 43 girls, 21 made the cut to appear on the Channel 5 show SingTel Grid Girls On Tour.

They stand to win the top prize of $20,000 and a chance to symbolically flag off the race in Singapore.

On the show, the girls will take turns to fly to different F1 races around the world before the competition arrives in town.

Says undergraduate Lim Wei Ling, 22, who will be going to the Hungarian race next month: 'I'm very excited about the trip and I want to meet the drivers.

'I love Formula One and have been a long-time supporter of Jensen Button.'

Another grid girl, flight stewardess Desiree Yong, 24, says: 'Apart from meeting the drivers, it is the overall experience of being part of the F1.

'It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.'

Viewers can log on to http://www.singtel race.com to vote for their favourite grid girl and stand to win tickets to the Singapore leg of the race.
