Lady Gaga’s guide to looking good
by Jill Alphonso

ITALIAN-AMERICAN pop star-cum-exhibitionist Lady Gaga has become the new poster girl for the new generation. And that’s especially when it comes to style.

The 23-year-old singer, who has made her name on hits like Just Dance and Poker Face – all off her debut album The Fame (2008) – has become famous for her ever-changing, in-your-face looks.

But in a recent interview with my paper, Gaga (real name Stefani Germanotta) said that when it comes to fashion, she’s a Mummy’s girl.

“My mother dresses nice every day and always takes care of herself,” said Gaga, who will be here next Wednesday to play her first headlining show at Fort Canning Park.

“She taught me that it doesn’t matter how fabulous you look – if you’re not nice to people all day long, it doesn’t matter,” she added. Gaga was born in Yonkers, New York, to Internet entrepreneur Joseph and Cynthia Germanotta. She moved to the Big Apple in her teens, and went from club performer to writing songs for the likes of Britney Spears and Fergie before hitting the big-time herself.

Asked when she first began playing with make-up, she revealed: “I was 11.

I would wear make-up before I went to bed – it made me feel pretty.”

Her best advice when it comes to make-up: “Don’t be afraid to wear it, but also don’t be afraid not to wear it.”

She added: “As a performer, by the end of a show, all that’s left on my face are eyeliner and false eyelashes. But I like that, I think it’s real.”

Read on for fave tips from the Lady.

BARE IT!

Style secret: Do your make-up according to how you feel each day. “I wake up some mornings, and I’d feel like my skin is bronzed and lovely. I’m not a ‘less is more’ person but, on those days, I’d just slap on some lipstick and go.”

Try: M.A.C lipstick in hot Russian Red ($28). Or, for other Gaga-like colours, try M.A.C Satin Lipstick in Pink Nouveau ($28, above), a hot pink. For a nude look, try Bobbi Brown’s nude collection colours like its Soft Blush 42 ($33).

Buy: Available at M.A.C and Bobbi Brown counters at Isetan Scotts, Tangs VivoCity and Raffles City Shopping Centre.

FAKE IT!

Style secret: If you didn’t know by now, Gaga is all about fake eyelashes.

“It’s the one thing I’ve got to have, all the time,” she said. “They bring drama to the eyes. I go for thickness, rather than length – I’ll wear three pairs on the top lid
alone. They’ll be short and thick.

Also, tailor your falsies to suit your eyes – cut them to fit. That works every time

Try: M.A.C fake eyelashes (above, $22 each). Pair with eyeliner, like Shu Uemura’s Painting Eye Liner in black ($34).

Buy: Available at M.A.C outlets. Shu Uemura is available at ION Orchard and Metro Paragon.

CLEAN IT!

Style secret: The best way to clean your skin is to go for good old soap.

“I was blessed with good skin,” said Gaga. “But I’ve found that the cheapest, most effective way to keep your skin nice is to use Ivory soap. It takes everything off, and it’s cheap. My mother taught me that one, too.”

Try: Ivory soap, or even Dove, which Nicole Richie swears by, too.

Buy: Ivory (above, $5.60 for a pack of four) and Dove ($3.60 for a pack of three) are available at major
supermarkets like Cold Storage.
