Tress for success
by Sylvia Toh Paik Choo

SHADES of Avatar!

When a long-limbed, pale grey figure loped into view.

What must shoppers in The Heeren have thought at the sight of the tall girl in the woven dress with the weaved hair.

It was Toni & Guy hairdressing’s interactive collection 2010 in their just renovated salon on the third level.

Practically all the guests turned up in black, melding if not disappearing and then reflecting into the black and mirrored decor of the new place.

Said one self-conscious guest: “I should have gone into the toilets to make sure my hair looked okay before I stepped in here.”

Not that anyone would have noticed, because there were proper head-turners as eight women modelled definitive urban styles you can wear from catwalk to street.

Toni & Guy is official haircare sponsor of London Fashion Week this last decade and holder of 11 British Hairdressing Awards.

They flew their international artistic team into town – Efi Davies and Jane Stacey – who created and coloured the styles on parade, to meet their counterparts in the cut-wash-blow-dry industry.

Basically what has happened to locks and tresses is how to connect your hairstyle with the fashion you sport.

So it is no longer just about the cut of your clothes but how your crowning glory is an extension of your wardrobe.

A closetful of wigs and toupees and hair pieces then?

Not really no, simply put your head in the hands of your stylist and say: “But not the Avatar look.”

Actually, why not?
