Marriage contract requires man to pay a million yuan

CHINA - A poor man has to sign a prenuptial agreement before his rich mother-in-law agrees to let the man and her daughter get married, Wuhan Evening News reported.

The man, 28, is surnamed Zhang and comes from an impoverished region in Bijie, Southwest China's Guizhou province and now works in Wuhan, Hubei province. Three years ago, he felt in love with a girl, surnamed Yang, from Fuyang in East China's Anhui province.

Yang's parents are both civil servants and are financially well-off. Despite the continuous objections of her parents, Yang refused to dump Zhang and insisted on getting married in October this year.

Seeing no hope of breaking up the relationship, Yang’s mother had to give up but required Zhang to sign a written contract, with many stipulations.

Zhang must move to Anhui province to develop his career otherwise he needs to pay 100,000 yuan ($14,900) as compensation. He also must pay one million yuan if he has an extramarital affair.

According to the contract, Zhang must also cook dishes to Yang’s taste and be responsible for washing, cutting and cooking vegetables as well as cleaning dishes.

Huh? You're referring men obtaining maintenance payment from the ex-wife or what? I have not yet heard of such a case in Singapore.

1. Unlike in Singapore, a Pre-Nup is enforeceable in its entirety in China.

2. Its enforceability in this case is subject to the guy being able to pay up, as there is no such thing as serving time in lieu of payment.

3. It is rare for pre-nups to be drafted in this way, but well...reporters enjoy breaking juicy news, don't they?

4. Pre-nups aren't really needed either way as the chances of marrying a good Chinese wife approaches infinity unlike in Singapore.

As I see it, the parent's intention of getting the man to sign such a contract is to hopefully "scare" him out of marrying the daughter.. Anyway even if the man agrees and signs the contract, if he refuses to honour it and ask the wife to keep it from the parents, what can they do? And if the man really wants to desert the wife later, he can simply disappear to another city. China is so big, unless the parents have "high-level" connection, it would be almost impossible to seek him out to ask him for compensation.

Women are just like clothing, we put on and take off as we like. To has a marriage contract is an extreme. In the present case, the young lady is deeply in love with the young man.The young man needs to compensate the young lady if he breach his contract, what about the reverse happen. If the lady happen to breach her contract and goes for an Ang Moh who can promise her a better life. The young man must lay his terms and conditions if he thinks that the marriage contract is been unfair to him to protect himself from third parties interference, this will then act as a guarantee to himself that there is a win-win contract.

Even a marriage is controlled by $$$ these days.
For the sake of LOVE, the man agreed to suffer.
So what can you say? 一个愿打一个愿挨...

Kind aof wierd but I guess it's done in the interest of the daughter. At then end of the day, it is up to the man whether h is happy to accept such agreement and contended to carry on wiht the gal, whether the gal does gonna treat him like that as what her mother has imposed, etc. After all, love is between two persons.

Somtimes I felt that parents should guide their children, not impose strict rules and regulations, and expecting everythign to go their way. it's gonna be disastrous at the end. And any regrets should any tragic incidents happened is not going to help.

"Live life to your fullest and contentment and do likewise for your offsprings".

I see nothing wrong. The mother just want to protect the daughter and the family money. The guy must have considered everything and considered the terms a worthy trade-off in return for marrying into a much better off family where generous help will be given for buying an apartment + car.

The 1m rmb compensation for extramarital affair is interesting. Perhaps our SG Courts can take a leaf from the smart mother-in-law and forbid unfaithful spouses from obtaining maintenance payments.
