Big, bold bling for your neck
by Jenni Epperson

Like the economy, fashion is taking a plunge, with necklines sporting big statement pieces. In these bleak times, mixing semiprecious stones with faux bijoux is the way out of depression.

Statement neck accessories can turn even the plainest tank top or shirt into a canvas for stunning, wearable artwork.

The Spring runways were all about statement neckpieces. One of the most interesting was Karl Lagerfeld’s Spring collection - 'metal body jewelry' on swanlike necks.

Meant to mimic tattoos, the beautiful pieces have the effect of baroque lace, a beautiful contrast to the sci-fi, futuristic concept of his asymmetrical suits.

To find such big neckpieces in Manila, head to the New Yorker shop, described by owner Liz Lirag as "a closet full of vintage stones from my mother’s treasure trove way back in the 1960s".

The pieces include cabochons in coral, turquoise, agate, lapis, jade, tiger’s eye and carnelian, pearls and crystals of every shape and colour.

The store first used the stones in 2004 to embellish a line of jackets and belts. Eventually, Lirag created cocktail dresses and evening gowns that were “Russian Renaissance meets Marrakesh”.

The stones became more mobile and adaptable, not merely as beading but more functional and wearable.

Go ahead, make a statement with a big, bold, beautiful neckpiece. It’s definitely prettier than wearing an albatross around your neck.
