Would you buy a diamond ring that just suspends the stone in midair?
by Shi Tianyun

SINGAPORE - We've seen it all. Statement jewellery with bling bigger and more sparkly than any other so I have to admit that it takes something remarkably different to impress me; well, I've finally been impressed.

I've come face-to-face with the magic that's the Niessing Tension ring; a solitaire diamond suspended on a ring without seeming to have any actually setting or material holding it in place.

Founded in 1873, the German jewellery label is known for classic design and experimental expression but it's really its technological prowess that's made the brand's name.

Niessing invented the seamless wedding ring in 1904 and more recently in 1979, developed the Tension ring.

By harnessing the scientific power of tension the diamond floats in mid-air ‒ making for a genius, innovative design. I even prodded and poked at the diamond to see whether it would drop or even shake, only to be amazed that it didn't budge a millimetre.

Niessing's jewellery is now available in Singapore and it has released an exclusive collection of Tension rings, featuring Singapore jewellery brand Lee Hwa's pride - the Destinee diamond.

Called the Heaven, each ring has minimalist streamlined curves Niessing is known for along with the technology to keep the Destinee diamond afloat. This is one ring I wouldn't say no to.

Before I finish wrapping my head around the Tension ring, I discover the Colette rings.

These rings look exactly like a golden string wrapped around your finger; the metal coil is remarkably delicate, thin and so malleable I have trouble believing that it's made of gold or platinum. Like the Tension ring, you really have to see it to believe it.

The Niessing Heaven rings are available in 18K white gold or rose gold with both matter and polished finishes. Both Heaven and Colette rings are available at selected Lee Hwa jewellery stores.
