What is foremilk and hind milk?

At the beginning of a feed, your milk (the foremilk) normally appears watery and bluish.

It is rich in protein, lactose, vitamins, minerals and water. Towards the end of the feed, the hind milk which is richer in fat tends to look whiter.

Babies need both foremilk and hind milk. That is why it is important that your baby is allowed to keep suckling from one side till she gets to the hind milk. Only then should she be offered the other breast. If your baby takes in the hind milk from the breast, suckling from only one side may satisfy her.

While suckling, some babies may take a rest during the feed and slow down on suckling. You
may think that the baby has gone to sleep after finishing the feed and remove her from the breast.

If she has not drunk the hind milk she needs to satisfy her hunger, she may appear  dissatisfied.
