Dial-a-surprise and delight your spouse
by Gwendolyn Ng

Engineer David Liew stepped into a telephone booth in Millenia Walk yesterday, but it was not to make a typical call.

Instead, the 43-year-old rang up a "butler" from a special concierge service - set up by Marriage Central - to arrange a surprise for his wife of 15 years.

Mr Liew was tight-lipped about his request, saying: "It's a secret. But I'm sure she will like it."

Launched yesterday, the Real Love Phone Booth and its Real Love Concierge service are part of Marriage Central's annual campaign to promote marriage wellness.

The roving phone booth will be stationed at various locations in buildings such as Marina Bay Link Mall and HarbourFront Centre from now until March 23.

It will allow working adults to dial-a-surprise for their spouse.

Marriage Central - an agency under the National Family Council - plans to fulfil 50 of the most heartwarming requests, provided they cost under $30 each.

At a press conference held at Millenia Walk yesterday, Marriage Central revealed that its workplan for the year will adopt a two-pronged approach - Changing Mindset, Effecting Behaviour - and includes getting couples to spend more time with each other.

Ms Anita Fam, chairman of Marriage Central's advisory board, said: "When we have kids, we (often) forget about our spouse. But our spouse needs our time and attention (too)."

She added that, in an age of consumerism where items are not built to last, the agency hopes to impress on couples that marriage is a lifelong commitment.

Results of a Marriage Central survey released last year showed that nearly half of the 400 married couples polled said they had considered divorcing their spouse at some point.
