Video sparks debate on divorcees and 'ang pow'

MALAYSIA - A video clip of a man throwing a stack of ang pow to a divorcee has gone viral, reported Kwong Wah Yit Poh.

The incident occurred when the woman, who was visiting a relative, allegedly asked for her ang pow.

An argument ensued with the man saying she was no longer married and as such, should not receive ang pow.

She insisted and the relative threw a stack of ang pow that he had with him at her. The scene was recorded and posted in online forums, where it sparked differing opinions from netizens, with some saying it was fine to give ang pow to a divorcee.

Others said they were no longer entitled to it.

A 50-year-old man, who has been divorced for five years, said he still gave ang pow as it was part of the Chinese New Year tradition. A 23-year-old undergraduate opined that those over the age of 30 and who were financially stable should not ask for ang pow anymore.
