Shiseido launches face cream more expensive than gold

Japanese cosmetics firm Shiseido will be releasing its much anticipated limited-edition skincare cream priced at a whopping 1,050,000 yen (S$16,855) for a single 50g jar.

Called "La Creme", it is to see its debut on Sept 21 as part of the 30th anniversary celebrations of  Shiseido's luxury beauty line "Cle de Peau Beaute".

The cream is touted to have powerful anti-ageing properties which can both lift and tighten facial skin.

At nearly 21,000 yen (S$337) per gramme, the cream is more expensive than gold, which the Daily Telegraph estimates is priced at about £33 (S$65) per gramme.

Each product is housed in a hand-crafted jar made up of 30 layers of crystals and three platinum rungs.

The containers were created in collaboration with Crystal Saint-Louis - a specialist glass maker from France known for creating designs highly sought after by collectors.

The company is only releasing three jars of the product, and will be accepting orders at its main store at Ginza district, Tokyo from Aug 30.

It will hold a draw if it receives more than three orders.

For fans of the cream who can't bear to part with S$16,855, Shiseido is releasing another limited edition 50g jar of cream, this time costing a much more affordable 84,000 yen (S$1,348).
