That same year, she turned to modelling and started to make appearances at car shows and to perform on stage, earning her titles like China's Top Nude Model, Queen of Controversy and Sexy Goddess.
When asked about these labels, Gan said: "I like 'Sexy Goddess' and 'Queen of Controversy', but the term 'nude model' doesn't sound too respectful.
"As long as the term is a respectful one, I'll be able to accept it."
But Gan's suggestive style of dressing and performance are not exactly widely accepted.
Earlier this month, billboards of her performance in Nanjing next Friday raised eyebrows as they were reportedly located near several schools.
The advertisements showed Gan wearing a onepiece swimsuit, with the description "China's top sexy goddess".
Several Chinese netizens expressed their unhappiness on Weibo, saying the billboards were an "unhealthy influence" on children.
When asked about this, Gan said there were lessons to be learnt. Advertisements "Although I have a sexy image, I hope organisers who host my events will be mindful of where they place the advertisements," she said.
"If they're placed near schools, maybe they can use photos that are less sexy."
But Gan has no plans to give up her sexy image.
She said that for her first trip to Singapore, she has prepared several eye-popping costumes.
"One of them is a handmade dress studded with beads, diamonds and crystals," she said.
"Another is a see-through cheongsam, with a bikini under it."
Gan said her clothes are created by her team of designers, although some designs are conceptualised by her and her younger sister.
Her most memorable outfit was one she wore last year at the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition, comprising a pair of pants and two strips of cloth covering only half of her breasts.
She said: "It was very well-received by the crowd and I felt very pleased."
