Choo doesn't keep secrets
by Koi Kye Lee

KUALA LUMPUR - For the shoe-making industry to flourish it is important that the industry's knowledge and skills are imparted to the younger generation.

These are the wise words of world-renowned shoe designer Datuk Jimmy Choo.

Choo, who believes no one should stop learning, said that with education, experience, training and knowledge, the quality and craftmanship of shoe designs would improve.

"There is a need to nurture, teach and impart knowledge to young apprentices so that the skills can be passed on to the future generation. It is also very important to encourage young shoe designers to hone their skills and craftmanship," he told the New Straits Times recently.

Sharing his experiences, Choo said he had tremendous passion and love for his work, where observation played a crucial role in design.

"One has to be passionate with a job he does. For myself, the inspiration to design shoes comes from my surroundings and the trends."

With a vision, the impossible was achievable, he added.

The Malaysian-born Choo will be sharing his insights and knowledge on the global shoe-making industry and how the status of the local shoe industry can be elevated during the inaugural Malaysia International Shoe Exhibition.

Also, 10 of his most successful creations will be showcased for three days at the exhibition in Putra World Trade Centre beginning April 2.

Themed "Walking In Unity -- 1Malaysia", the exhibition will be launched by the wife of the prime minister, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

Among the highlights are a shoe history gallery, shoe-making gallery and a shoe fashion show.

The event is co-organised by the Tourism Ministry and Malaysian Footwear Manufacturers Association.
