KUALA LUMPUR - The Malaysian International Shoe Festival held last Friday proved to be a huge success as it managed to chalk up RM5mil(S$2.1mil) worth of sales, Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said.
She said the three-day shoe event last week attracted 45,000 visitors and helped to position Malaysia as a premier shoe destination.
“With such success, we believe our vision to put Malaysia as the ‘Shoe Capital of the East’ and the ‘Sole of the Equator’ will be soon achieved,” she said during a press conference here yesterday.
Dr Ng said her ministry was committed to promoting Malaysia’s footwear industry as a new niche for the tourism market and hoped to see more international shoe buyers and brands, participating in the festival next year.
Dr Ng said the presence of world-renowned shoe designer Datuk Jimmy Choo contributed to the success of the event.
“We hope exhibitors who want to enrol for the following event will have a string of new shoe collections to display and are able to give good bargains during the fair,” said Ting.
