The good, the bad, the ugly
by Imran Jalal

New Balance 576 Hell by SBTG and Methamphibian, $249, from Leftfoot

The iconic 576 by New Balance, a walking shoe produced in 1988, now comes in two new designs.

It gets a makeover in white for one version called Heaven and sports black for the other named Hell. The update were launched last year in conjunction with the 576’s 20th anniversary. Only 444 pairs of each design are available.

The new designs are the combined effort of New Balance, home-grown specialty sneaker boutique Leftfoot, renowned sneaker customisers SBTG by Singaporean Mark Ong and the Los Angeles-based Methamphibian.

1) Snakeskin stitched onto the iconic N logo adds texture and a luxe factor.

2) The holographic camouflage print in violet cranks up the hip factor with its snazzy sheen.

Levi’s Denim Injected Sole trainers, $109.90, from Original Levi’s Stores

Levi’s has given three of its 58 sneakers denim-injected soles. This quirky detail is produced by moulding denim onto the rubber soles, which are then melted and left to solidify.

1) The denim sole may not serve any practical use but it lends a creative touch to those in the know.

Puma Lizoid King First Round, $269, from Limited Edt Vault

These high-cuts pay homage to the Japanese monster-flick craze of the
1950s to 1970s. The Lizoid King, inspired by Godzilla, is one of five beasts in the Puma Monster Pack released in March. Each pair comes in one of Puma’s popular models, such as the Clyde.

The Mecha King with its bolt hardware is a nod to the monster machine
Mechagodzilla, while the scaly Terror King resembles the three-headed Ghidorah. King Kong gets reincarnated as the Ape King with fuzzy pony hair while the giant insect Mothra is a riot of colours as the Moth King.

1) The waxed faux lizard skin brings to mind Godzilla’s craggy scales.

2) The Puma logo at the heel is replaced with a glaring red eye embossed on the shoe.

3) The spikes on the heel mimic those that run along the monster’s back.

Onitsuka Tiger for Mini, $239, from StarThreeSixty

British car brand Mini has teamed up with Onitsuka Tiger, the premium
heritage line of Japanese sportswear brand Asics, for the second time. To commemorate the launch of the Mini Clubman estate wagon, they have come up with three pairs of trainers in black, cream and red.

Modelled after Onitsuka Tiger’s Mexico 66 – the label’s top-selling athletic shoe – the pair borrows its aesthetics from the Mini to rev up its style meter.

1) Laces pass through the metal eyelets which reflect the chrome detailing of the car.

2) The ribbed insoles sport the same look as the upholstered leather seats of the car.

3) The toe panel takes its cue from the front grille of the Clubman.

4) The heel tab conceals the Mini metal logo.
