Go on, take the short cut
by Yeoh Wee Teck

BOYS will always worship their sports stars, so is it any wonder that Real Madrid's footballer Cristiano Ronaldo has started a craze for shorts?

Ronaldo's version is the male equivalent of the female hot pants.

The shorts are hardly bigger than a pair of y-fronts, and that is not a style that works for all.

First, you'll need killer thighs and your body fat percentage must be in single digits.

Luckily, you can still put your legs on display but retain some level of modesty.

A good fit is important.

Too-baggy shorts are comfortable but sloppy, but wear them too tight, you'll look like an off-duty go-go boy.

I always like my shorts to end just around the knee, and this looks good on guys with short legs.

I like it as simple as possible - flat fronts, minimal details - although I've seen some guys rock the front pleats and side pockets.

One style to avoid - please, I beg of you - is the dorky straight-cut three-quarter denim pants with lots of pockets and buckles.

And almost inevitably, the guy wearing it would be under 1.6m tall.

Hard to pull off

Even a male model would find it difficult to carry that look, so mere mortals shouldn't bother.

Roll up legs - stopping just above the ankles - is a better alternative, though that trend is rapidly waning (it is now pants that end up at that length).

And in the recent Milan menswear fashion week, labels are still showing shorts that end mid-thigh.

And, perhaps in an ode to the recession, greys are cropping up everywhere.

But it doesn't matter what is showing on the runway: If there is one truth, it's that boys only bother to dress up when they want to impress the girls.

We've lined up five different looks - modelled by Shao Yang, an up-and-coming artiste from GW Agency - and I've asked my friends who are former The New Paper New Face finalists to pick their favourite look.

Wearing these looks may not get you a babe of these girls' calibre, but it's good to dream, isn't it?

1 COLOUR CODED

Top $19, shorts $86, straw hat $43 (from Topman)

This is the choice of the New Face girls.

Think of it as Justin Timberlake with a burst of colour. Or a tribute to the late King of Pop Michael Jackson's '80s flair.

This look will work on almost everyone: The shorts should be slim cut, and end above the knee.

Although colours are sombre this upcoming season, brights will always sparkle.

Don't be afraid of colour - just go with your instinct.

For added dash, add a hat.

M Revathi, The New Paper New Face 2008 finalist: 'It looks simple and yet trendy. Definitely a big yes!'

2 PREPPY CHIC

Top $33, shorts $49 (from G2000)

Preppy chic works with most Singapore men, and the beauties agree.

This look ranks second with them.

You've got to keep it really simple with this: It's just a top and a pair of shorts.

The colour helps - pastel is pleasing and non-confrontational.

This is just right for the shy boy who wants to impress.

Constance Lau, The New Paper New Face 2008 finalist and a 2009 SingTel Grid Girl: 'It's really simple but at the same time, looks so good.'

3 SPORTSMAN

Shorts and tee (available next month from Adidas)

This is more workout than go out, but the girls liked it enough to rank it third.

These shorts are slightly longer than the usual running shorts and I think it's a good thing.

Maybe it's just me, but why is it a case of shorter the shorts, the more mass it's trying to encase?

Jessica De Costa, The New Paper New Face 2007 finalist: 'Sporty is always hot!'

4 GEEK CENTRAL

Top $29.90, shorts $49.90 (from Uniqlo)

This look is one of those you can wear from day into night.

In spite of the print, it's actually a classic that you can wear repeatedly.

The idea is to team a solid colour with a pair of Madras shorts.

Naazrina Mohamed, The New Paper New Face 2006 finalist and Ms Tourism Queen International 2007: 'You've got to be youthful to carry off this funky look.

'It's not for everyone and could end up looking nerdy.'

5 BEACH KID

Top $21, denim shorts $75 (from River Island)

For the most relaxed look, this is the best combination. Denim is best for this.

Make sure it's of a relaxed fit, and get a pair that's as distressed as possible.

Roll up your shorts till they hit mid-thigh. River Island is offering a 10 per cent discount storewide when you present your student pass or ez-link card.

Hamizah Nasir, The New Paper New Face 2007 finalist and a 2009 SingTel Grid Girl: 'It has a grunge vibe - very laid-back and casual.'
