Betrayed Wife

TOO little, too late. That is what Ms Dorothy Chua, 45, says of golfer Tiger Woods’ statements about his infidelities.

She told The New Paper on Sunday: “What’s the point of making amends after the untold hurt he has caused his wife? Will saying sorry take away the pain of his actions?

“I’m sorry but once a man cheats, he can never be trusted again. Even if the marriage survives, there’ll always be an element of mistrust.”

Ms Chua should know – the marketing manager divorced her ex-husband for infidelity in 2000. She has been single since then.

At 11am Friday (midnight Singapore time), Woods publicly addressed the sex scandal that has consumed his life since last November.

“I was unfaithful. I cheated. I had affairs,” he said, speaking from the TPC Sawgrass, home of the PGA Tour. “What I did was not acceptable.”

Noting that Woods spoke for only 13 minutes and would not accept reporters’ questions, Ms Chua asked: “If he has nothing to hide, why is he unwilling to hold a press conference? I’m sorry, but I think his address is just another publicity stunt.”

Looking back on her three-year marriage, Ms Chua sighed. She said: “I met my ex-husband through friends and we hit it off immediately as we made each other laugh. But my parents disapproved as he only had O Levels while I have a polytechnic diploma. In the end, my parents told me it was my decision to marry him and they wouldn’t interfere.”

After a year-long courtship, Ms Chua married the accounts clerk. They then had a banquet in a Chinese restaurant in Marina Square.

She recounted: “Our friends and relatives wished we would ‘bai tou xie lao’ (Mandarin for ‘grow old together’). Sadly,we didn’t live up to their wishes.”
