When it comes to cartoons, nothing beats the animated characters from my childhood.

There's something classic about the simple bold outline of Mickey Mouse and the heartwarming story of friendship behind Winnie the Pooh.

Recognising this, a slew of fashion retailers have rolled out retro T-shirts emblazoned with - dare I say it? - "vintage" cartoon characters.

At Uniqlo, for instance, cartoon characters, from Mickey to Hello Kitty, are ever the staple.

Mr Yasuhiro Hayashi, 38, marketing manager at Uniqlo Singapore, said: "Cartoons are an all-time favourite (among customers), regardless of age and gender."

Meanwhile, apparel brand Giordano has given Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Goofy and Pluto an edgy makeover with its Simply Me line, released last month.

A Giordano spokesman said: "The Disney characters are true icons. They are simple cartoons, but are bold and full of character... The Disney collection pays homage to that."

So far, the collection has been "very well-received", the spokesman said, adding that "we even had some customers reserving tees to make sure they can get their hands on them".
